Baska (Easter Bread)

Recipe from Doris Schlosser of Mandan, N.D.

1/2 cup whiskey

2-1/2 cups sugar

12 egg yolks, room temperature

2 cups heavy cream or sweet cream, warm

4 cups milk

1 stick butter, melted

3 pkgs. rapid rise yeast

2-1/2 tablespoons anise

1 tablespoon vanilla

1 teaspoon lemon extract

1 teaspoon salt

1/4 cup saffron (add to 1/2 cup boiling water, let set for a few minutes, strain, use liquid for coloring)

Raisins, optional

Enough flour to make dough easy to handle.

Raise, punch down, raise again. Put into pans and let raise again. Bake at 350 degrees for about 25 minutes.

Makes a big batch.
