Welcome rain will help crops grow

Monday, June 22, 2009 9:50 AM CDT

The weather station reported that Montevideo received 0.45-inch of rain on Sunday, June 21.

It seemed like a lot more when everything got drenched prior to the Fiesta Parade in town.

Looking at a rain gauge, 0.45-inch doesn't seem like much rain. When you think of it in terms of 100 acres, though, 0.45-inch rain is 1,221,930 gallons. An inch of rain on 100 acres is 2,715,400 gallons.

Montevideo has now had 1.82-inch rain in June. Timely rains will be needed to keep the corn, soybeans, sugarbeets, edible beans and alfalfa growing.

Here's some information from other towns in Minnesota:

Minneapolis: Received 1.98 inches from June 1-21. Received 0.65-inch on June 16, and 0.03-inch on June 21.

St. Cloud: Received 2.53 inches from June 1-21. Received 0.96-inch on June 15, and 0.65-inch on June 21.

Rochester: Received 3.14 inches from June 1-21. Received at least a trace of rain on 13 of the last 21 days. The largest rainfall was 0.93-inch on June 8.

Mankato: Received 1.27 inches from June 1-21. Received 0.06-inch on June 21.

Redwood Falls: Received 2.52 inches from June 1-21. Received 0.26-inch on June 21.
